The testing involves deriving a set of propositions – or hypotheses – from the theory that allow either to verify the existence of the relationships among the variables or to better define the conditions under which the theory is valid. This set of propositions should be formulated “so that if the theory is true then certain things should follow in the real world” (de Vaus 2001: 6–7).
