For members of those parallel public spheres, autobiography serves as a way of questioning the assumptions in the dominant public sphere by challenging dominant commonplace assumptions about individual members of the marginalized public spheres. Autobiographies present evidence of how lives are effected and affected by interactions with others, both within the particular public spheres to which they belong and outside of those spheres. Multiple interactions take place in a single life, and thus the autobiographer is the chronicler not of a single life story, but of the story of the interactions among many lives.
Autobiographical manifestos are rooted in the distinguishing attributes and places of time and space and the origins of histories. Nelson connects her work experiences to specific incidents in her life that are particularly revelatory. Most are incidents that involve family, particularly her father. For instance, when she decides to take the job at the Post, she has a dream—“more of a memory than a dream,” she says— about her father in which he stresses the importance of being “Number 26 Chapter 2 one!
