I have already indicated that the economic arguments in favor of tenure are secondary and that the major line of defense is and should be the defense of academic freedom. But since the economic arguments get so much attention, they should be explored. '' There are various versions. The most extreme is that faculty members may work hard during their first six years in order to get tenure. But once they have attained tenure, they have little incentive to continue to work hard, and consequently do not.

There are various models of a university. Only some of them are compatible with academic freedom, and hence only some of them are compatible with academic tenure. One traditional model of a university goes back to its origins at the University of Paris in the thirteenth century. That model consists of a group of scholars banding together and gathering around them students interested in learning from the masters. The university claimed autonomy in the sense that it ran its own affairs and often even claimed independence from local authorities in the enforcement of laws and the punishment of student offenders.

It is in part tenure that helps keep the salaries of faculty members low in comparison to the training required. The economic value of tenure is factored into the salary structure. Since tenure is not something that a faculty member can opt out of, all faculty members pay in lower salaries for the job protection that tenure provides. Moreover, tenure provides a relatively stable faculty for an institution. It cuts down on the costs of constant recruiting and the training that takes place in the initial period on a new job.
